36 Things That Won’t Matter When You Are Dead

(and are therefore not worth wasting your life on)

1.      How many likes you get on a Facebook or Instagram post
2.      Whether you ate that extra slice of pizza
3.      Whether you slept in instead of going to the gym
4.      Getting a bad haircut
5.      Accidentally stuttering
6.      Accidentally writing “your” instead of “you’re”
7.      Accidentally saying “Frankenstein” instead of “Frankenstein’s Monster” (seriously guys, chill)
8.      Accidentally standing on your pet’s tail (yes, you will feel tremendously guilty but pets are far more forgiving than humans. They move on and so should you)
9.      Accidentally spilling nail varnish on your carpet (yes it stains, yes it looks awful, will you carry that carpet stain into the afterlife? Probably not)
10.   Whether that stranger in McDonald's was laughing at you (they probably weren’t but even if they were, it doesn’t matter now and it won’t matter 80 years from now)
11.   Not getting full marks on every piece of work at school (not only will this not matter, it is basically impossible)
12.   Being honest with yourself and others (in the long term you’ll probably be glad that you were)
13.   Whether other people enjoy what you enjoy
14.   Wearing what you want to wear, even if it is unconventional (life is too short to be uncomfortable for others. Enjoy expressing who you are and try to minimise judgment of others doing the same)
15.   Asking for help (there is no shame in it, we all need it sometimes)
16.   Doing things that hold no importance except for the fact that you enjoy it (If you want to watch trashy television, watch some trashy television. We all need a good mind numbing or mindless distraction sometimes. It’s OK to pause your ‘self-improvement’ mode)
17.   Posting ‘too many’ selfies (There is no such thing as too many selfies. Be confident and share that confidence with the internet, we could all use some)
18.   Staying in when you really want to (everybody needs some ‘me’ time)
19.   Going out when you really want to (you can try to convince yourself that you want to stay in but although you can sometimes lie to your friends, you cannot always lie to yourself)
20.   Admitting you were wrong
21.   That time you had food in your teeth for hours and nobody told you
22.   That time you had toilet paper on your shoe and walked around for an hour before you realised
23.   Asking questions (it can be scary but it’s better than freaking out because you don’t know what to do. Trust me, your future self will thank you for it)
24.   Losing things (whether it is your favourite jacket, something sentimental or even something expensive, I’m sure possessions are worthless/unnecessary when you’re dead)
25.   Making your mental wellbeing a priority (you are not your body, your body is merely a shell for your mind and so your mental health should not be considered secondary)
26.   Crying when you need to cry
27.   Whether you look as good as some random person you saw in a shop (or some not-so-random person)
28.   Not being found attractive by somebody (what people find attractive differs from person to person, it is impossible to please everyone)
29.    Letting go of the toxic people in your life (Not all toxic people have cruel intentions, many are loving and caring but are toxic because they force us to compromise our own happiness – whether intentional or not, you need to let those people go)
30.   Dancing (even if you ‘can’t dance’, whatever that means)
31.   Standing up for what you believe in
32.   Proving to others that you are a good person
33.   Whether other people you know are getting married, have a boyfriend or find success before you. (Life isn’t a race)
34.   Forgetting it was your friend’s birthday (if they’re really your friend they will forgive you, we all have a lot on our plates and could all use a break sometimes)
35.   Whether other people earn more money than you
36.   Taking risks
